Panoramas from Israel

November 8th, 2010

I’m about to lower the quality of the content on my site by posting some photos of my own. I took these back in September 2008 on a tour of Israel. I didn’t really do anything fancy here. I took each shot by hand, moving the camera a bit each time and then merged them when I got back with Photoshop. They still need to be touched up but for the most part, I think they came out alright. I’ve scaled them down quite a bit from the originals to make them easier to view in a browser.

Dave Hill Photography

November 1st, 2010

I find myself quickly becoming an expert at discovering really cool stuff months or even years after everyone else. In fact, I suppose that is what this blog is about more than anything really. It’s just a rehash of cool stuff other people have discovered. But hey, it’s all new to me and I think it’s cool so the world has to see more of it. Anyhow, today’s cool stuff is the photography of Dave Hill. Hill’s use of professional photography techniques and stunning photo effects and photo manipulation makes his work immediately recognizable. His photos have a dark-gritty-surreal look to them that many photographers and designers have tried to imitate. And imitation is the sincerest form of flattery next to getting a blog posted about you on my site. So congratulations Dave! Also, he loves to tell stories. See if you can follow the story from these first eleven photos. I believe I’ve got them in the correct order. You may have to fill in some gaps with your imagination.

Illustrations by Byroglyphics (Russ Mills)

October 26th, 2010

It’s time for another blog showcasing the work of an amazing illustrator. Today’s illustrator is Russ Mills (aka Byroglyphics). Hailing from the UK, Mills work is a clash of styles from classical to pop surrealism, focusing predominantly on the human form, though also abstracting elements from nature and the animal kingdom. He studied Graphic Art and Design at Leeds Met University and is currently pursuing the more traditional gallery/exhibition path with solo shows in London and Bristol and group exhibits in the U.S. His distinctive style immediately caught my eye.

Holden Efijy Concept Car

October 19th, 2010

My good buddy and auto enthusiast @mcpeak sent me a link to this article on autoblog.com featuring this masterpiece. Holden, GM’s Australian subsidiary, debuted the Efigy in 2005, but Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo first sketched the car back in 1989. Ferlazzo’s aim was to combine the raw might and appeal of glory days hot rods with the technology available today. Proximity sensors open the doors as you approach. In addition to a push-button transmission, there’s a drop-down touchscreen LCD that controls the air suspension, sat-nav, radio, and other functions. The retro stereo graphic that appears onscreen controls a 2000-watt system with a hard drive for audio and video. The instrument cluster is electronic. The floor is hardwood: maple timber veneer with aluminum bands. Dual filament LED’s inside can provide different colored mood lighting. LED’s do illumination duty outside front and rear, with the LED headlamps cooled by fans. This is one sweet ride.

Chinese Paintings by Lou Dahua

October 14th, 2010

I’ve got a lot of things going on this week and haven’t had the time to write a proper post, but I did run across these amazing paintings by Chinese artist Lou Dahua. Lou studied art at the Beijing and Shanghai Universities and has been engaged in the meticulous brushwork of birds and flowers for several decades. His paintings are a rare blend of traditional Chinese and Western painting methods and have been on exhibition throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. Each painting is a one-of-a-kind hand painted original.

Zombies!

October 7th, 2010

One of the best things about having a personal blog is that one day you can blog about something silly and trivial like programming tips and the next day blog about something serious like zombies. Despite all the warnings about the impending zombie apocalypse, there is still too little being done to educate people. Thank goodness the good folks at AMC have stepped up to produce some quality zombie apocalypse programming. This is not the usual zombie tripe filled with conjecture and hearsay. This is based on research by professional zombieologist Robert Kirkman. AMC has greenlit The Walking Dead as a six-episode series which began filming back in June. The special 90-minute premiere airs on Halloween, Sunday Oct. 31 at 10/9c.

Needless to say, the zombie apocalypse community is quite excited. A tweet from fellow zombie enthusiast @k_to_the_t drew my attention to this magnificent piece. Daniel Kanemoto from Ex Mortis Films has created his own interpretation of the series opening using The Walking Dead artwork by Charlie Adlard & Tony Moore.

Illustrations by Stuntkid (Jason Levesque)

October 1st, 2010

If you’ve been following my random blog posts at all, you’d know I’m a huge fan of hand-drawn illustrations. Today I’m featuring the unique stylings of Jason Levesque AKA Stuntkid. His works are colorful, imaginative, always evocative, sometimes a little morbid, and sometimes downright twisted. You almost think you should look away but can’t quite bring yourself to do it. They certainly grab your attention or at least they did mine. You can check out the rest of his illustration portfolio here. Some of them contain nudity for those of you who might be squeamish about such things.
