Pendulum – “Watercolour”

August 3rd, 2010

Every three minutes and thirty-three seconds today, I’ve had to stop what I was doing, switch back over to the tab in my web browser with this video in it and press “play” again. Yes, it’s that addictive. It’s from the new Pendulum album “Immersion” which was released in the UK this past May but is not yet available on iTunes. This tune rocks seriously. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album.

Twitter Search parser in PHP

July 28th, 2010

Twitter

I’m feeling a bit uncomfortable right now, like I’m about to change clothes in a public dressing room whose walls don’t go all the way to the floor. Other than the occasional unsettling dream, I’ve never really thought about what it would be like; taking that part of you which is always hidden and private and putting it on public display. There really shouldn’t be anything to fear right? I’ve seen others’ and mine appears similar to theirs. Maybe mine has some weird lumps or is a little misshapen. Ah hell, no one ever reads this blog anyway. Time to lift the hood and show you all my soft and squishy goodness! Here’s some PHP code I wrote (and partly frankensteined) to parse and display a twitter search.

Embedding a Google Calendar into WordPress

July 27th, 2010

Google CalendarI was working on a project yesterday that wanted to show a Google calendar on a WordPress page. I didn’t expect to run into any problems with this (silly me). I thought I could just paste the calendar embed code into the HTML tab of the WordPress page. The Google calendar embed code is simply an iframe tag which calls your specific public Google calendar with some additional style values such as width and height. However, when I clicked the “Update” or “Publish” button, the HTML code disappeared. It turns out the WordPress editor doesn’t really like iframe tags and will remove them by default. So I pasted my embed code into the HTML tab and clicked update three more times. It didn’t work on the first try, but maybe it will work the second or third one right? My persistence wasn’t producing results so I decided to actually research the problem.

Say Hi – “One, Two, One…”

July 25th, 2010

They say “there is no accounting for taste” and there are few better examples of this than the music videos I post on this blog. I can’t even really define what it is I like about this one. It’s the video for the song “One, Two, One…” by Say Hi from the album “Oohs & Aahs”. Whenever I hear the song (I’ve got the album in my iTunes library), it gets stuck in my head. The video is fun and well made although in my opinion the framing is a bit too tight which occasionally makes me feel uncomfortable but I have personal space issues. And I’m not sure why it was filmed in super wide screen. It may have been the intention of director Drew Norton to portray perhaps along with the tight framing a sense of inescapability, but if that were the case, it shouldn’t have been filmed in a spacious wide open field. Perhaps it’s the contrasts in these themes I find intriguing. In any case, I wanted to post it here to keep it handy and see if any one else has any opinions on it.

Physalia Floating Garden Concept

July 19th, 2010

Physalia is a self-sufficient floating garden concept by Vincent Callebaut Architectures which would help clean the water which may be used for drinking as it navigates the European rivers. The main idea behind its architecture is the pneumatophorous organism “Physalia physalis” found in roots of some plants growing in swamps and marshlands. This amphibious garden incorporates both nature and biotechnology in order to harvest enough energy to power itself while navigating. Its design has photovoltaic solar cells over a double pneumatic membrane and is powered by hydro turbines which produce hydroelectricity using the river current underneath. The self-sufficient floating garden has its surface made of aluminum coated steel, which is again coated with titanium dioxide to purify the water by reacting with the ultraviolet rays of the sun. The vessel absorbs the carbonaceous and chemical wastes of industries and boats while purifying the river water organically by means of the hydraulic network crossed in its double hull. It’s a beautiful thing!

The Venetia Fair “The Ringleader”

July 10th, 2010

I was drinking coffee and browsing music videos on vimeo.com this morning when I ran into this little gem. It was about the furthest thing from what I was actually looking for but once I started watching, I couldn’t look away – like a musical train wreck you can’t stop listening to. I’ve watched it several times now and it grows on me a little more each time. I don’t think it’s possible to make a better video for this song. I’ve previewed the rest of their album “The Circus” on iTunes and it’s really quite good. It’s probably not safe to listen to while operating a motor vehicle, but it’s perfect programming music. I’ll definitely be adding it to my collection.
